Nestled within the breathtaking San Juan Mountains, Telluride, CO has become a well-known year round destination. Known for its extreme skiing and other outdoor snow adventures in the winter, it’s also home to many amazing and unique festivals throughout the summer season. People flock from all edges of the world to experience the magic that happens here every year. Whether you like music, theater, film, art, science, wine, mushrooms, or outdoor activities, Telluride has something to pique everyone’s interest. The festival season kicks off with the highly regarded film festival, Telluride Mountain Film, at the end of May, ends with Telluride Horror Festival in October, and offers some sort of event each week in between.
One unique-to-Telluride experience that takes place here every year is the Nothing Festival, which was accidentally created by a local in 1991, who was fed up with the amount of festivals that took over his quaint mountain town. He was tired of the lines, tourists, and hippies that didn’t already live here, so he wrote a letter, as a joke, to the city manager requesting a permit for a non-festival, which would reserve a weekend during the year in which no event would take place. To his surprise he was taken seriously. The result, the Nothing Festival was born and the locals could finally take a breather and have their town back for just a moment. The highlight of this festival you might ask? Well besides celebrating the act of doing “nothing” there is the ever so popular Nothing Parade, which consists of locals making their way down main street (Colorado Ave) from west to east, riding bikes, skateboarding, walking, running, etc while wearing nothing. And by nothing we mean NOTHING, except maybe the necessary costume accessories, such as a feathered boa, sunglasses, or maybe a hat. This festival will not be advertised on any event calendar. You must be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to witness or take part in this spectacular event. Hint: if this is the one thing you’re looking forward to most during the year, just hang out in the middle of Colorado Ave around 8pm on a Sunday, sometime around mid to late July and one special day your world will be filled with pure astonishment as your eyes take in everything that is Nothing Fest. Please no photos or posting to social media.
